Have you ever been so aware of what you’re thinking about to the point you clearly see the workings of the mind? How the mind can take you off in directions that doesn’t make sense and has no truth to what’s being said. Not too long ago I experienced just that!

Just after Christmas I was at my moms and went to use the washroom in the basement. By the sink was a new scent of hand soap that smelled wonderful. I found out my niece’s boyfriend gifted her the soap at Christmas. I went to buy some and learned that scent wasn’t available anymore.

A few mornings later I was exercising and started to have thoughts about that soap. If I continue to use her soap there won’t be any left for my niece to enjoy. From there I thought the next time we go over to my mom’s my niece will have a note written on the soap saying not to use it. I then thought I would take a picture of that note and send the picture to my sister showing her what her daughter had done. Wow…at that moment I stopped thinking about the situation because none of that was making any sense to me.

These thoughts were popping up out of no where! From the one thought of soap running out…to getting to the place where I was going to do this and do that…I knew it was an example of how the mind has no clear direction; it creates unnecessary drama. The moment the fourth thought surfaced about me telling my sister, I knew none of what I was thinking was even true! As much as my mind made an issue about the things my niece would or wouldn’t say…there was none of that spoken or even implied. She so generously put her gift of the bottle of soap out to be used by whomever used the washroom.

In reflection I could so easily see that these thoughts were giving me the example I needed in order to understand the workings of the mind. How real they appeared…and yet how false they actually were. I was in awe at how the universe gave me such a crazy example to learn and grow from!

It’s important to recognize we need our mind in order to exist in this life. Even though the above example was shared…it wasn’t the only one I had. We’ll continue to have all kinds of thoughts related to all kinds of things. Some of those thoughts will be useful and necessary directing us on our journey forward. Then there’ll be thoughts taking us off in directions that don’t even make sense and couldn’t possibly be true. It’s these kinds of thoughts that create problems in relationships. Your awareness is one of the best tools you can use to discern truth from non-truth.

Wherever you are on your journey, may you find what works for you…find your own truth…and you will always be guided to feel at peace inside.
